Topic 1: Welcome to Calculus I

As a starting point for learning Calculus 1, please write a comment in which you address three issues:

1) Did you take Calculus in high school?

2) Why did you register for this class?

3) By the end of the semester, what do you expect to achieve in this class?

Please post your comment by Monday (09/03/2007). Otherwise, I will assume that you cannot access the blogging site. In this case, you will need to talk to me by the end of Tuesday's lecture.

DO NOT FORGET TO WRITE YOUR NAME AT THE END OF YOUR COMMENT!

I did indeed take Calc in High School. I only got a 3 on the AP test however, so I decided to retake this class. I wanted to make sure I really knew the material before moving on, and we're ahead of the game any way so I thought it couldn't hurt. I suspect that this class will help to strengthen my foundational math skills and help me to be more successful in further persuits.

Yes I did take Calculus in High School. I took AP/IB and recieved a 4 on the AP test and a 6 on the IB test. I decided to retake this course however because a friend's mom, who is a college calculus teacher, recommended it. She believes that Calculus II is the hardest and sugested that I have a solid base in calculus I.

By the end of the semester I would like the knowledge that I learned in high school to be reinforced so that I am prepared to move on.

The highest Mathematics class I took during High School was Precalculus, I didn't have the privilege of taking calculus. To be honest I always been a good student, but Math is my weakest subject. I hope that this class will help me develop better math skills so I can apply them to my future career.

I did take Calculus in highschool, however it was not AP because another class of mine was in the same time slot. I took this class because I enjoy math, and it will help in my future (whatever my major will be).
At the end of this semester I expect to achieve a solid foundation in Calculus, a differnt way of thinking, and ready to take Calc 2.

I took Calculus in High School. I am taking the course again to strengthen my skills for Calculus 2. I need this class for my degree. I plan to achieve better problem solving skills and a greater understanding of the Calculus concepts.

I did not take Calculus in High School, the last math class I took in High School was Precalculus as a result of my focus on the sciences. This class will hopefully reinforce my waining knowledge of mathematics and provide the much needed calculus credits I require for transfer to another program.

I did not take calculus 1 during high school. I am currently registered in this course because it is a requirement for my degree (Biology Premed). By the end of this semester i hope to gain more knowledge about limits and derivatives, as well as intigrations. With this course will also enable me to increase my critical thinking abilities, hopefully allowing me to use these skills in the future once I have accomplished the career I am seeking. -Casey Mauldin

I did not take Calculus in high school. The highest math I took in high school was Algebra 2. I went to an arts high school and opted to take more music classes than math courses. However, I have taken all three prerequisite courses once I came to college. I am taking Calculus now because I have decided to go the Pre-med track, and many Medical Schools require Calculus. This is the reason why I registered for this course. By the end of this course, I hope to have a really strong foundation in Calculus in case I decide to take a higher level math course in the future. I am also willing to put in the work to secure a high grade.

I did not take calculus during my high school years. Rather I decided to take Ap statistics instead, not realizing how important calculus was at the time. I registered for this class to meet a pre-req, and also because i honestly enjoy mathematics. At the end of the semester I hope to have fully grasped the concepts of Calculus from derivatives to limits, to even integrals

I took AP Calculus AB in high school and received a 3 on the AP Exam. I'm retaking the class because the engineering advisors recommended that engineering majors retake the last math class they took. Also, I hope to achieve a better understanding of the subject. I hope to refamiliarize myself with the basic calculus concepts needed to advance to calculus 2.

I did not take Calculus at my high school because it was not offered. I registered for this class because I intend on being an engineer and this is the foundation for calculus two and three. by the end of this semester I want to be able to apply the principles of calculus correctly.

I took AP Calculus BC during my senior year in high school. I initially thought that I would have made at least a three on the AP exam so I would not have to take this class but my advisor told me to register for this class just in case. From looking over the syllabus and attending class this week, I can tell that this class will just be a review of what I did last year so I should have no problem.

I did not take Calculus in High school, I thought about it but never took it. Math a science used to be my favorite subject when I was growing up until I reached upper level math, but I think its because the teachers I had for upper level weren't that good. Hopefully, my opinion on math will be what it once was. I need this class for my major Chemical Science so that is why I registered for the class. I hope by the end of the semester I will not only understand Calculus but learn to appreciate it and be great at it. When I do something I strive to be the best I possibly can be at it.

I took Pre-Calc in my junior year of Highschool. In college I took Applied Calc and I am now registered for this course because Applied Calc does not suffice the requirement to start the Computer Science major. By the end of the course I wish to better understand this subject and to also have a good refresher of the course.

No, unfortunately I didn’t take Calculus in High School. I was too involved in JROTC and Football, to think about getting ahead of the game. I registered for this class so that I could complete the math requirement to obtain my Bachelor degree. By the end of this semester, I expect to completely understand calculus and boost my overall grade point average at FSU, so that I can get accepted into Med School or into the Criminology Masters Program.

I did not take calculus in high school. I only took up to precalculus, and then took precalculus/trigonometry my freshman year of college. I am now a senior, so it has been awhile since I have taken any math. I registered for this class because I am getting ready to apply for medical school and a lot of medical schools require calculus or recommend it. I expect to streghthen my math skills by the end of the semester. Also, calculus helps with the physical sciences which will in turn help me with my MCAT score.

I took AP Calculus as a senior in high school. I recieved a 4 on the exam, but decided to retake it. I am a biology major, so I figured I should have an extreamly solid background in math.I also wanted to get a feel for how math was taught at FSU. I hope to perfect calculus 1 by the end of the year and be ready to move on to Calc 2.

1) Yes I did take Calculus in high school.
2) I registered for this class because it is required that I take calc I-III in order to complete major in Environmental Engineering. I also think it is interesting.
3) Most say that Calculus does not make sense until something clicks in your head and you understand everything. By the end of the year I want to understand what I'm doing and why. Not just simply following procedure.

I did not take Calculus in high school because it wasn't an option where I attended high school. Although I wish I could have been given that opportunity so that I would be more familiar with the information. I registered for Calculus because not only is it a required class for my Biology major but it is also an important pre-requisite for pharmacy school which I hope to attend in the Fall '08. By the end of the semester, I expect to achieve a better knowledge of calculus and it's concepts which will not only help me throughout my career in the future, but also on the PCAT admissions test for pharmacy school.

yes

i wanted to take a refresher course to help me out with some shady sections of the course. i also wanted to get some experience in a college level math course before i moved onto brand-new courses and concepts.

i just want to have, like i said before, a better understanding of some of the harder calc. concepts.

I actually never took Calculus in high school. I completed all four years of math by my 3rd year since I had high credits from middle school, so i actually lucked out.

MAC2311 is a requirement for Biology students, and i know this class is very beneficial for almost every science class on campus.
I expect out of myself a better understanding and grasp of what calculus really is. Trigonometry and Pre-calculus classes were to prepare us for calculus and I feel ready for this semester. It's not an easy class and I am sure of this...but I enjoy challenging myself and I know this class will definately do that.

I never took Calculus in high school. I am a Secondary Math Ed student, in which this class is a requirement.
I have always done well in all my past math courses and expect to do well in this class.
I took pre-calc almost two years ago so I hope I did not forget alot.
I hope to gain the knowledge to proceed to Calc II.

1) Yes I took calculus in high school.
2) I registered to have a really good review in calculus and improve my understanding. I took calculus BC (1&2) but only received credit for the first one from examinations, and barely that much. So I figured this would be a good way to make sure I have it down before I move on to complex integrals and such.
3) As I said above, I hope to achieve a better understanding of calculus to help me when I move on to more complicated classes.

I hope to achieve a passing grade, more preferably an A but I can settle for something in the B range aswell....
Hope to get through this with you all in as painless a way as possible...

I took AP Calculus in high school and passed the AP test with a 5 but i was too scared to move on to Cal 2 so I'm taking this course over again hoping to get a better understanding and a good foundation so that i might not struggle as much in Cal 2
