Last Topic: Applications of Calculus to Your Major

From this Calculus 1 class, you have learned about limits, derivatives, differentiation rules, applications of differentiation, integrals and applications of integration. Please share with me and your classmates how you might use the material of this class for your major(s). Do you plan to take Calculus 2 at some point?

If you finish your comments by Thursday next week (Dec 6), you will receive 100 extra-credit points. Remember to write your name at the bottom of your comments. I wish you success for the Final Exam!

From this class, I will use to Calculus to help me in classes like Evolution. I may take Calculus 2 just because you have prepared me so well for it. It never hurts to know too much math. If i decided to change into engineering and follow in the footsteps of my father, I would need calculus for physics and more advanced math.

I know I will use Calculus for my major because I'm majoring in Chemical Engineering. I know already that I at least need to move up to Calculus 3 so I will need to take Calculus 2 during this spring semester.

I am planning on becoming a civil engineer so I am required to continue on to Calc 2 and 3. The material I have learned in class will help me prepare for not only my future Calc classes but also for classes such as Psychics. Psychics should be a breeze now that I know how to use derivatives and such to find velocity.

I need calculus to help complete my major: Chemical Science. For I need both Physics I and Physics II to graduate. Therefore the material I have learned in class will be vital for my future success. I am thinking about taking Calculus II, but it is not required.

I have two majors Chemical Science and Criminology. For Criminology, Calculus itself does not help me. For Chemical science Calculus is required not only for the major but also for Physics I & Physics II. I do not plan on taking Calculus II. Calculus does sharpen your analytical skills and allows you to view things differently, which can be useful for other careers other than the sciences.

I'm majoring in meteorology, and I'll need calculus not only for the physics coursework and the math classes to come (I have to take calc 2 & 3 as well as one more math class), but also for the meteorology classes. In the upper levels of meteorology coursework I need calculus to help graph weather patterns and predict what they'll do.

As a major in Civil Engineering I know that I need to take at least 3 Calculus classes. Therefore, I will be taking Calculus 2 next semester along with Physics which I will need to use Calculus in.

I will not need calculus necissarily in my major, nursing, and really never needed to take it in the first place. I think it will help me with the classes i will need to take, like chemistry and perhaps biology aswell.

I don't think I will be taking calc two unless maybe if you are teaching!!

i know i will use calculus in my major because my major is environmental engineering. Im taking physics A right now and i learned that hard way that you should probably learn calc. before you try physics because derivatives and integrals are so essential to the science of physics. I will definitely be taking calculus II next semester because its certainly required for my major as well as my future professional path. I just wish you were teaching it next year i hear calc. II is intense.

Calc 1 will make Physics II much easier and it will pop up now and again doing population growth problems, and in organic chemistry doing concentration problems. I do not plan on taking Calc II instead opting for Biostatistics.

I am thinking of changing my major to mathematics and then going to grad school to get another degree with a lot of mathematics so this class will stay with me for a while. I will take calc 2 next semester.

This class has definitely helped me because i have a couple physics classes still ahead of me not to mention I will be definitely taking Calc 2 in the future. This class has prepared me very well for what lies ahead. I'm hoping you decide to teach calc 2 in teh near future.

I am not really sure on my major either economics or engineering, both which require calculus. I plan on taking calc 2 and physics 2 in the spring, since I have such a strong foundation in calc 1.

I'm majoring in Civil Engineering, so calc 1 will definitely help me reach my goal. Calc 1 is a prerequisite for calc 2 and physics, which are both required for my major. I plan on taking both of these classes in the spring.

I took this class along with physics and it really helped me understand the concepts and what I was actually doing. I will be able to use calculus in my future career, as it is engineering. I will be taking Calc 2 next semester and I feel well prepared from you class. Thank you :)

I am majoring in biology and marketing so this class will definately be useful. I will be taking calc based physics in the near future, as well as a bio calc lab. However, I will probably not be taking calc 2.

As far as using Calculus in my major I don't see it coming up too much while being a computer programmer, although we do use algorithms and such the basic form of calculus will most likely not effect my work, although because I will be going on to Calc2 and a whole new line up of other maths, this class will be important to me in that respect.

I am majoring in either mathematics or chemistry, both of which require me to take this class as well as Calc II. So taking this class will definitely help me in any future math and/or physics classes I need to take, including Calc II next semester.

My major is computer engineering so I will use the methods we learn in calculus for sure. I am already signed up for calc 2 for next semester as it is a requirement for me. In engineering I know I will be doing a lot of graphing to compare data and of course I will have to know things like the area under the curve or the slope at a certain point. Both of those also things I will need for physics, as I also plan to take Calculus based Physics....ooo what fun!

Since my major is civil/environmental engineering I will use calculus the rest of my life..I will also use it in physics as well. I plan on taking calculus 2 next semester, along with calc-based physics. Both of which will strengthen my Calculus 1 skills!

My major is biology so I will use the methods of calculus in courses in the future, like physics. The methods of calculus that we have learned this semester will also help me to be prepared for the PCAT test which is an entrance exam for pharmacy school. Although I will not continue to Calc II, what I have learned this semester in calculus will continue to help me throughout my major.

my major in engineering so I'm sure I'll be use calculus alot in designs and layouts. And just the material it self will help but the stradegy and way od thinking to solve calculus problems, will help my with my tought process when solving for soulutions to problem and how to approch them. I do plan to take cal 2 i belive i have to go up to Cal 3 and if i change my major i was lookin into becoming a math teacher.

I plan to major in biology and eventually pursue a career in medicine. In the field of medicine calculus will be needed for many applications, more predominantly for the machines in which i will be using on the patients. I do plan to take calculus 2, in fact I am enrolled for the course next semester. And thanks to your course I am ready to move on to the next level of mathematics.

I believe taking calculus will help me in my major because I am majoring in Secondary Math Education. I do plan on taking Calculus II next semester. I was hoping you were going to teach Calc II but today you said you were graduating. Good luck and congratulations.

My major is Biology, and my plan is to eventually become a doctor. Calculus will be used in preperation for my future such as in other college courses, entrance exams, and graduate courses. It might not be used directly in the feild of medicine, but Im sure it will be helpful in what I am planning on doing. I am taking Calc 2, and enrolled for next semester. Thanks to this class I feel fully prepared.

I took this class because it is required for some medical schools out west that I applied to. I am surprised at how much I actually enjoyed this class because I wasn't the biggest fan of math. I will not be taking calc 2 because I don't need it and I am graduating at the end of next semester. I think I will use calc not by what was actually learned but the way in which we learned it. It will help me with my studying and practical use of other subjects in med school. Thanks!!

With my major being biology, I know that calculus is a necessity. During my next two years of undergrad studies and all throughout medical school, I have heard from many students that the concepts of derivatives and differentation is a MUST in order to succeed. I am extremely grateful that you were my Calculus 1 teacher and even though I had no prior caclulus experience you made it understandable and you were extremely helpful throughout this entire semester. Although I am not taking Calculus II, the knowledge I have gained during this semester will continue with me through the next few years of school.
Thanks again!

My major before I signed up for the class was Computer Science, but during the semester I ended up changing my major to Information Technology. This class was no longer required for me, but I still enjoyed it so I continued to attend. I know that if I was still a heavy programmer I would have to use calculus on a daily basis due to the amount of algorithms I use but, now that I have changed I see myself not using calculus as much. However, I imagine it will venture into my life again. My new major deals with businesses and applying new technology to them, so eventually down the road I believe I'll cross paths with our friend calculus again.

I do not plan on taking Calculus II, and mostly for the reason that I won't be able to have you as the instructor. You were superb, and I am very grateful for having you as my teacher. I will miss your antics and style of teaching.
